Interfaces That Feel Calm
Oct 30, 2024 · Reflection
Calm is often mistaken for minimal. They overlap, but they are not the same. A calm interface can be dense. A minimal one can be loud. What matters is whether the product knows when to speak.
I look for calm in three places. The first screen of any flow, where the product introduces itself. The empty state, where it has nothing to show and has to explain why. And the error state, where most products start shouting.
A calm product treats its user as an adult. It assumes they will read the line of text before they look for the button. It does not repeat itself. It does not apologise twice.
The hardest part of designing for calm is resisting the urge to fill the space. Silence in an interface looks like a problem until you sit with it. Usually it is the most generous thing on the screen.
