On Quiet Products

There is a kind of product that is loud by design. It wants your attention every morning. It notifies, suggests, celebrates, nudges. It treats your engagement as the metric that matters most.

And then there is the other kind. The text editor that opens in less than a second. The calendar that shows you today and nothing else unless you ask. The note app that does not greet you. These products do not try to be your friend. They try to be useful, and they trust you to come back on your own.

I have noticed that the second kind ages better. The loud product feels exciting for a week and exhausting for a year. The quiet one becomes part of how you work, and you almost forget it is there. That is the highest compliment a product can earn.

Designing this way is harder than it looks. It requires saying no to almost every clever idea. It requires trusting that restraint will be read as care, not as absence. Most of the time, it is.
